My 14-year-old daughter selected this from a list of options for her summer reading assignment. It's a dark and sad tale, but I am glad we read it together, as he gave us a lot to talk about. Her assignment was to identify the central theme. We decided that it is that real love--both familial and romantic--requires full disclosure of your true self. So much sadness at the heart of this family story grew simply from each character's failure to speak their truth to those who matter most.
