Rated Brooklyn 8/10
I liked the story, although I didn't love it. But parts of it were truly haunting: I grew up where many of the moms and most of the nanas were immigrants who lived Eilis's story, having immigrated to the United States from Ireland in the 1950s. In many ways the doors were thrown open for them, with so many opportunities for work and a thriving Irish American community that provided a sense of belonging. But it was not until I read Brooklyn that I really thought deeply about the sadness that came with this journey--the loneliness, the longing for home, the choices that weren't really choices that led to this American dream.

Kristen Potter's reading on the audiobook added another layer that kept me completely engaged. A stellar performance.
NowReply
