Early on, the exchanges with his father are thoughtful and fun. There is no conflict here as his father asks him good questions and is supportive. A great, lightweight entry into the book.

Later on, Hsu paints himself as this arrogant, judgemental "know-it-all" introvert. His belief that his tastes are superior, and gate keeping attitude are enough to make him extremely unlikeable. But thinking about it, how many of us at 18 had this superiority complex? Thinking that we knew what was cool and what was trendy? Tough to get through but I could understand especially why he was that way.

The second half after the tragic loss of Ken changes Hsu. You see a young man who has to accept the loss of his best friend and learn how to process that pain, and the resulting growth and change to honor him.
