Rated Paddle Your Own Canoe: One Man's Fundamentals for Delicious Living 6/10

I remember seeing an interview of Offerman on one of the late shows shilling one of his books and I decided to throw a few of his books on my TBR list. I finally got around to picking up his first book. My husband picked it up first and lost interest in it pretty quickly. I think it was the inordinate amount of writing spent on his rural upbringing in small-town Illinois. I didn't mind it and found it mostly amusing, but it was a lot.

What this book did make me wonder is if it was really his/his publishers/agents decision to sound like Ron Swanson throughout the book or if that's really what he sounds like when talking at home. I found it amusing on Parks & Rec, but beyond someone, say, 25 years old it's odd. The constant use of every $5 word doesn't come across as natural but more like trying to impress others with their vocabulary. The vocabulary itself wasn't a problem for me.

Things finally got really interesting, though, when he hooked up with Megan Mullally. It really is the old saw, it's not what you know, it's who you know. Once he had his in through the Will & Grace people, his career took off (and so did the book). Which, hey, take the opportunities where you can get them. It's great that he seems to adore her too. Bonus on top of bonus. Other than a couple of chapters where he spent an inordinate amount of space talking about woodworking and specific wood joints?? where my eyes wanted to glaze over, I was entertained. I'm willing to give his other books a shot at some point. Your mileage may vary.
