Deciding to expand my reading of scifi book authors in 2024, I'd noted Connie Willis off some list or other when I soon after ran into this book while visiting the library. It sounded like a light-hearted and quick read, something I've been lacking for some time in my reading. That's pretty much what this book turned out to be.<br/><br/>A quick and fun read, it's filled with colorful characters and a plot that kept things moving without delving too much into character drama. The aliens and much about them was pretty creative and I enjoyed how they were described and differed from so many typical tropes of humanoid aliens. Some of the running around and miscommunications on one hand got a little repetitive in places, but on the other I couldn't be too mad about it considering that's way more understandable than aliens being perfectly capable of understanding humans and vice versa.<br/><br/>References to classic western movies and tv shows figure prominently and while I'm familiar with many of the titles, I have never seen them nor had interest in them. A reader would get more out of their mention if they have seen them, but I don't think you would HAVE to have watched them to enjoy their inclusion. It would just enhance the enjoyment, in my opinion. This book's also often described as a bit of a romance story, but I would barely count it as such other than the bit at the end.<br/><br/>Speaking of the ending, that was a little bit of a disappointment. It was very abrupt and might leave the reader feeling like they missed a few paragraphs. Even if it's meant to be a cliffhanger, which honestly would be nice, it really needed a little more than the last sentence. Not everyone will get what it probably means. Hopefully Willis will write a sequel and explain in more Indy adventures.
