Rated The City We Became 6/10
This was an easy read. I kept reading just to see how all the avatars of the different boroughs all end up together. The idea is creative, but I really felt its short story origins and that was before I looked it up and read that's how the novel came about. All the running around felt like it was just stretched into novel length without enough filling besides everyone almost constantly bickering. The ending felt rushed and went from getting it together to some time later with the group hanging out at the beach.

I do want to know how they will deal with the hanging pall off in the distance, so I'll read the sequel, but rather than hooking me to avidly want to go to the next book this one left me frustrated. Good thing the second book already came out some time ago and I'd already checked it out from the library at the same time as this one otherwise I might've moved it to the mental back-burner. It was also wise to make the series a "duology" instead of what sounds like what was the original plan of a trilogy. The second book is leaner, so hopefully the plot is tighter and fuller.
