Rated Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World 6/10
It's been a very very long time since the one time I read a Murakami book and I probably either wasn't old enough or in the right frame of mind to read Japanese literature at the time. I can't say it's ever going to be the first thing I'd ever reach for, but its surrealism has its place. I've read many books somewhat in this style since that earlier time and understood exactly what was happening in the two parallel stories pretty quickly, especially with the character's coin counting in his pocket. Going with the flow and not having a lot of expectation of what happens next worked for me reading this novel. Although I do have to say I found the story inside the wall with the skulls and the shadow a lot more compelling maybe for its more outright fanciful? setting. A more obvious? closure would've been nice for the two stories, but unnecessary. My thanks to my book buddy Jason for the birthday gift throwing me back into some Japanese literature now that I can appreciate it better. :)
