Rated Leviathan Wakes 6/10

I first heard about this series when the tv adaptation was gearing up to come out. I watched a couple of episodes of that and was disappointed to not get hooked because the premise seemed right in my wheelhouse. I just didn't find any of the characters interesting. Figuring as typically "the book was better," I decided to give this a try instead. Unfortunately, I found the same problem with the book, I just didn't find the characters particularly interesting and I got through the book caring more about what was going to happen next in the overall universe's alien invasion than what was going to happen to those people. In particular, I found the... fetishizing? of Julie Mao by one of the two POV characters weird? disturbing? repulsive? A large part of why I kept reading was to get to the part where he finally caught up with the real 3D woman and that the fleshing out of her character, so to speak, would do away with that ridiculousness. Yeah.... As for the plot itself, it also seems a kind of generic mish-mash of other stories told before by better writers. All of this sounds pretty negative, I know, but I'd say overall it's not a bad read, it's just not as great as it's seemed to be hyped. There's still room to do something interesting and unique from where this book leaves off, so I'm going to reserve judgement on the overall scope of this off-brand "Alien" for maybe another book or two.
