Rated Storm Front 6/10

It's been many many years since I read this book for the first time, probably over 15 years. When I first started reading The Dresden Files, they hadn't quite taken off yet and they all still had their original paperback covers. It eventually got difficult to find the paperbacks with those covers. I hadn't read any of the books ever since that first reading. I don't tend to re-read books almost ever. A few years ago Butcher said he was done with the series and I was sad after so years of fun with Harry Dresden. When Butcher announced he was putting out several (!) more books, I decided I had to re-read the whole series again and maybe by the time I finish the new books will be out in paperback. So here I am, re-reading "Storm Front" for the first time in over 15 years.

With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight it's interesting to see how many elements that become integral hallmarks of both Harry and his adventures are already here. Yeah, his books aren't too deep, at least not in the beginning, but they are fun and I do love Harry's self-deprecation, wit, and courage under fire. It's cool to see how much his character evolved over 15 books in 15 years, but even from the beginning he poked fun at his own chauvinism and old-fashioned ways. Considering how much he's willing to throw down to do the right thing without being a total boy scout, I always found it forgivable until it stopped really being an issue. On a different note, can I say how much I love the turn of phrase "ass deep in alligators"? I'd missed that. This book starts off the series a little rough around the edges, a little bit uneven, and wraps up fairly quick, but does just fine despite its somewhat formulaic supernatural noir. A damsel in distress, escapes by skin of his teeth, and always Karrin Murphy.
