Rated Blown Away 7/10

Something interesting happened tonight... I felt the passing of time. 😳 It's hard to explain the feeling, but growing older is a weird thing. The phrase, "rose colored glasses" is used to describe a psychological phenomenon of recalling the past more positively than it was actually experienced. And that's kind of what's been happening to me a lot more as I re-watch certain films, especially some released during the 90s when I became most interested in films and film production. That passing of time has done wonky things to my preferences and taste. And that's okay! It was almost a little saddening to feel differently towards an "old favorite"... as if I was betraying myself. Was my opinion wrong or flawed all those years ago?? I didn't know... But, what a gift it is to simply have the privilege of aging and experiencing life. With that gift of time, you're going to change, feel, and learn new things... I know I have. And so, it's wildly fascinating to me that there are films within my past that I used to rate so comfortably high (and recall them as such), but now they just hit a bit differently. Had you asked me a week ago what I thought of Blown Away , I would have easily said it was a 4.5 star movie with a lot of great action sequences. It's probably been 20 years since I watched it last, but now it almost feels like I've seen a different movie. I still enjoyed it and had fun watching all of these classic-90s actors doing good work, but it's no longer near the 4.5 stars that I'd once thought it was (and it should be noted that while there are plenty of explosions, there doesn't seem to be as much action as I had remembered, though there is a very young Forest Whitaker.) It's kind of weird feeling to re-watch a film and pause, thinking, "huh, did I actually think this was that much better of a movie back then??" Certainly some films age better than others, while others are succeeded by newer, similar content (perhaps crafted better too), slowly eroding the older film's memory. You come to enjoy and prefer newer or different performances and storytelling. I'm sure there are a ton of factors in play here, but it's interesting to learn you might have varying ratings/reviews of the same film depending on where you are in your life and what you've been through. Pretty cool stuff. So now I'll have a new perspective on Blown Away, shaped by multiple viewings decades apart. That's a gift.
