Rated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 8/10

Wow, I really enjoyed this movie. So let’s get a few things out of the way. The last and only time I watched this film was when it was released in the movie theaters about 13 years ago. At that time it was shown in 48 frames per second and in an odd aspect ratio. It also arrived after the completion of Lord of the Rings trilogy, which is one of my favorite set of films of all time. So if you were to ask me yesterday, what I thought of this movie, I would’ve said it was good but not amazing. I rewatched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey today (for the first time, the extended version) and after so many years, it felt almost entirely fresh. And what fun it was too! While not quite as grand as the LOTR trilogy, it felt very much like an adventure and retains the overall epic feel the originals have. What a blast it was to see familiar characters and locations, all while that fabulous score accompanied us along the way. The new characters haven’t fully grown on me yet in the same way the originals have, but they’re still quite fun. And plus there’s gem quotes like: “True courage is about knowing not when to take a life but when to spare one.”
