Approaching this as a standalone film without the context of the last 100 years of pop culture and previous Superman media, I would give this movie 3 stars. But that's not how I approached it. I went into this with all these things, so I loved it. We finally get a Superman that embraces the best aspects of its predecessors: - Fantastical scifi elements of the DC comics universe, to which I was first exposed in the DC animated shows (Justice League Unlimited, Superman the Animated Series) and the comics. Just batshit crazy stuff like how Metropolis is almost destroyed by metahumans or inter-dimensional beings weekly, but its citizens accept this as normal life. - "Superman" being the alter ego for Clark Kent, not the other way around (Smallville, Lois & Clark) - Superman as an iconic figure of hope and goodness (Superman 1978, theme included) Yes, it was overstuffed with characters. Yes, some of the plot points were contrived. Yes, black holes don't work like that. But it was so much fun and refreshing to finally get this lighter, ironically human take on the DC universe.
