Welp, it turns out folk horror is my shit. I loved this. The 70s folk acoustic music early on effectively establishes the pagan, grassy hills vibe. The editing moves between the narrative and what feels like a music video, which really pulls you into this island's practices and attitude towards life. Christopher Lee obviously kills it, but Woodward really carries it along as the beta male with his Christian blinders on. Completely bought in to the unquestionable authenticity of his God and religious practices, he can't fathom the barbarity of these pagans. He's completely blind to his own hypocrisy. I'm not sure if he was ever intended to be a sympathetic character, but he perfectly embodies all the criticisms and concerns 21st century folks have with repressed Christian nationalists and cops. You could not have created a more appealing target for ACABers. The script is tight, the ritualistic imagery well-executed, and the conclusion satisfying. Sad to see that this was Robin Hardy's one hit.
