Rated Little Darlings 9/10

Wow, I really loved this one, despite the questionable stuff with Desante (maybe reel that one in a little further next time.) It's got the classic 80s summer camp fantasy in which there are between 0 and 2 adults present at any given time, so the kids do whatever they want. WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER played straight. I didn't start doing summer camp things until the 90s, but surely it was never actually this wild? But that's just the platform for the heart and soul of the movie: teenagers discussing and pursuing losing their virginity. And I say "soul" because this movie is full of it; the sincerity and emotional honesty that unfolds throughout the runtime is completely original for this sub-genre. Tatum O'Neal endeared me from the start (probably because I only watched PAPER MOON for the first time a few weeks ago.) But Kristy McNichol really carries the authenticity of the film! And, of course, young Matt Dillon as the dopey bad boy was great. I'm excited to watch it again with my own daughters when they're around this age.
