Nice tension and a few red herrings, but it loses stars for the (spoiler for the ending) gimmick of 'surprise, the murderer is a trans woman'. The profiling and procedural police work stuff is well done and I get that this came out almost 30 years ago now but I think there are still books coming out with that problem.
