I really liked this movie! Godzilla is so gross and icky (in a positive way) and the progression of the Japanese politicians was hilariously slow and yet realistic. I am not a Godzilla fan in the general case, I haven't really watched a Godzilla movie besides some scenes from the new Legendary Pictures movies, but Shin Godzilla has opened my eyes to what can be done with the character. The main character Yaguchi's anguish during the midpoint of the movie was palpable, and the desperation of the characters following US involvement was powerful, with a special shout-out to the Japanese response to the US and UN security council resolution; the frustration and anger was poignant and pervasive. Godzilla's reveal wading back to Tokyo hit like a ton of bricks, and despite seeing parodies of the scene beforehand, the breath igniting and turning purple was absolutely stunning, I caught myself staring open-mouthed and wide-eyed at the screen during that scene. The final scene before the credits was also conceptually terrifying. A lot of the horror in this movie comes from things that aren't visible and it's incredible because what's on screen is also pretty horrifying! My favorite gag throughout the movie was the politicians and scientists continually going "there's no way this thing could possibly do the thing" jump cut immediately to Godzilla doing the thing. The comedy of the politicians constantly needing to schedule meetings to schedule meetings to schedule press conferences masterfully undercut the horror of the evolutionary monstrosity destroying Japanese buildings. My only complaints were the politician scenes running too long (but at the same time if it were much shorter I don't think the climax would have been nearly as impactful), the movie's over-reliance on dizzying camera swiveling and jump cuts especially at the climax of the movie, and also the US ambassador Kayoko's English being very clearly not fluent.
