There's some interesting parts, but - holy shit- the writing is cringeworthy. Reads like a translation. It feels like the battle scenes were intended to be gory and shocking, but end up just being weird and outlandish. The whole calendrical warfare thing was poorly described. No idea how this won a Locus award, or got on the Nebula finalists list. Had to force myself through it.
