Rated The Year of Magical Thinking 10/10
> Be me.
> Having a very stressful week at work.
> Blizzard occurs in NYC.
> Can’t go to the gym, too busy.
> I just finished “How To Lose Your Mother” by Molly Jong-Fast.
> Very depressing read about your parents aging and how your relationship changes.
> When she’s at her low point, she flies to LA and reads this book on the plane.
> Well, that book sounds nice. I know of Joan Didion as **The California Author**, hopefully this book is about sunshine and reframing your thoughts!

Nope, book starts out with her husband dying while her daughter is on life support in NYC in the winter. But, goddamn, Joan can fucking write, dude. Can’t put this down, as it’s a fantastic meditation on reflecting on what is said and not said in the past with your spouse. The nature of memory. It starts to put me further in my feelings.

What really got me was how they both worked together in their apartment for their whole careers, yet, often felt very apart, in their own little worlds. Were they communicating all the time? Yes, but the distance is still there. My wife and I were closest during COVID when I could hear her on the phone all day, but since she’s switched jobs and I’m back in office, this distance has increased and this being in the same world has become harder.

I feel like Joan is too hard on herself about these reflections, but one must be in grief.

My family is growing, yet, one day it will shrink, perhaps with myself going first. I need to communicate better. I need to be intentional with my time. I have to listen and be there instead of in my work or phone. I guess this book was uplifting in its own way.

All I know is I need to read more Didion, as I just got the end of the story instead of the beginning.
