Rated The Gods of New York: Egotists, Idealists, Opportunists, and the Birth of the Modern City, 1986-1990 10/10

I flew through this book! The narration of the story through new articles was so good.

My main takeaway is, while NYC is still racist, there are no longer lynchings in south Brooklyn. While there are still homeless, we do not have encampments at city hall. While HIV/AIDS is still a thing, the mayor is not ignoring it.

The other takeaway is that I hadn’t realized that before Bloomberg, all the mayors had drive time radio shows where people could call in and yell at the mayor. There’s a scene in the book where Governor Cuomo calls in to a show to argue with Al Sharpton. Our elected officials are accessible on social media, but that is so manicured and anonymous that we lack these visceral scenes.
