Rated Thor: Love and Thunder 4/10

This is the first Thor movie were I’m pretty familiar with the source material they are using but not giving credit to. And as an adaptation the incredible Thor run by Aaron/Ribic/et al it’s a complete failure. Managing to take the two key parts that could have got their own movies (and honestly deserved them), Gor the God Butcher and Jane Foster the Mighty Thor, and smashes them into the same story giving neither amble time to breathe and tell the story properly.  Even divorced from the source material this movie is lacking from it’s predecessor. It felt like it was hedging it’s bets in every aspect, compromising on everything to the point where nothing felt like it had any conviction. It wanted to be heady and philosophical but it couldn’t at the expense of it being light and jokey, it wanted to be romantic and feminist but couldn’t at the expense of the action.   This is all not to say there isn’t anything that works.  Because there is lots that does. But those parts are all bits that you wish could have had their own film. I liked the romance between Thor and Jane and always have, if they wanted to do that they should have picked a less philosophically heavy villain. But on the same token I really enjoyed Bale as Gor and his story and motives are really cool and interesting but they don’t fit in what is essentially a himbo romance road movie through space.  Everyone involved deserved better here, and it’s one of those where I wish I could get a behind the scenes explanation as to what went wrong here. But I’m sure we won’t get that for a few years when Taika doesn’t want to keep working for Disney and will be alright with breaking NDA
