Rated The Castle of Cagliostro 7/10

Kind of an odd duck this one. Miyazaki is obviously a master and his talents and idiosyncrasies as an artist are on full display here. There’s some top notch animation in this and Miyasaki has a fun take on Lupin et all. But I can’t help but feel like Miyasaki was a not good fit for Lupin III. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Lupin III forces Miyazaki into modes he’s obviously not interested in exploring, while Miyasaki sands down a lot of the edge that makes Lupin III fun to watch. It’s like the sort of high velocity, high camp, pulpy, James Bond meets Bugs Bunny romp that you would normally associate with Lupin III gets washed in a stream until it’s this smooth, charming yet somewhat somber fairytale action movie. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t feel like Lupin III.  Like I said. It’s an odd duck.
