Rated Eight Crazy Nights 5/10
So to be clear…I had never seen this and it was on YouTube for free. That said. This? This did not age well. Not sure what I was expecting. It’s been a really long time since I watched a Happy Madison movie. I just forgot how mean the comedy is, which I get is the point is Sandlers character is supposed to be the biggest jerk that ever was or whatever. And I figured some of the comedy wouldn’t hold up but good lord, it was like 90% of the humor was “that person is different somehow”. The rest were poop jokes and then there were the 5 bits in 80 minutes that were actually kinda funny. And there was something especially grating about watching a movie narrated by Rob Schneider with the full benefit of hindsight, which is saying a lot considering Sandlers choices for Whitey. Credit where it’s due, it was deftly animated. And Sandler, as Davie and only as Davie, was a surprisingly good voice actor. If I didn’t already know that he insists on having him and his friends do a treatment of just about every project he works on I would say I wish he did more animated stuff. And I have to kind of acknowledge that there’s a surprising amount of heart in this movie. The problem is with the aforementioned 90% of the humor is juvenile punching down the movie can’t have it both ways, as much as it tries to. I always wondered why this movie is never really a part of the conversation when it comes to animation for adults or alternative holiday films. Now I know. In fact it’s crap like this that sets back the cause for the former so…thanks for that Adam Sandler.
