Rated Pump Up the Volume 7/10

Much better than I was expecting. It was interesting time capsule of a movie. Really goes to show how long the sort of anxiety a lot of people living in America have been feeling it. That funny feeling where you know everything is fucked but you have to keep playing the game anyway. This movie couches it through the lens of teenage angst and rebellion but, for lack of a better term, it really do just be that way. It's also a somewhat amusing illustration of the fact that if they thought people could get this radicalized with short band radio, we never stood a chance when it comes to the internet. Without the Monday morning quarterbacking tho this movie is a lot of fun with a surprisingly healthy outlook. Usually movies like this devolve into a more raging id. But this was pretty interested in showing teenagers a way to cut through the bullshit and self actualize in a good way. It's a movie that seems to live by the good art credo of comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable. What looked like it was going to be a movie about crass sensationalism turned out to be a pretty sensitive film, criticizing systems that try to sweep the marginalized under the rug. The acting and the script are a little uneven but there's more to like than not here. I had never even heard of this movie before watching it so I encourage you to check it out if you have the means.
