Rated Boyz n the Hood 6/10
Both prescient and archaic. It's a story that rings true today in a lot of ways but I find it hard to believe that we would tell it the same way now. It's an important film because it showcases a kind of pain, hopelessness and vulnerability, particularly that of it's male protagonists, that we don't usually get to see on screen. But man I cannot understate how little regard this movie has for Black women, who are largely depicted as selfish, weak, naive and hysterical. It's also strange how much this movie bends itself into knots to avoid critique of the police as an organization, choosing instead to make it's bad apple cop a Black man who does all the civil rights violation while his White NPC partner looks on helplessly. I suspect there was studio restraints there tho.
