Rated Leaving Las Vegas 5/10
Starts off pretty strong but ends up being a bit of a slog by the end of it. The performances are good. The leads have great chemistry to the point that it kinda sucks that the movie is so hell bent on keeping the two of them apart for a good chunk of it way too much of which is the obligatory "wow sex work sure is fraught and depressing" bullshit. The movie never should have left The Whole Year Inn. I cannot stress enough how much this movie is hamstrung by the soundtrack. Just the same 2 or 3 Sting songs over and over. There's just this thing about them where all he's doing is the worst rendition of American songbook stuff you've ever heard while singing like he thinks he's best singer of all time. You can't imagine that someone who is othe wise pretty talented can be this insufferable. Until you hear Don Henley and he is somehow worse. Having just watched it, I was in a unique position to identify that this movie stole the "hooker talking to her disembodied therapist" framing device from Klute. Klute is a much much better movie. Watch Klute instead. Unless you're here for Cage. In that case...I dunno literally any of his other movies from the 90s would likely be a better use of your time.
