Rated Pompo the Cinephile 5/10
I really wanted to like this movie more than I did. There's some really beautiful stuff in here and this is obviously a very personal sort of story. The problem is that is gets bogged down by one too much anime bullshit, and this is coming from someone who has a much higher tolerance for anime bullshit than most. Too twee by half, most of the characters are so wrapped up in being socially inept or annoying or "sexy" that they just feel really flat. Then there's the matter of this being "Toxic Beliefs About Being a Creative Greatest Hits: The Movie" Which sort of makes the whole thing feel inconsistent. Because on the one hand it's telling what is, essentially, a wish fulfillment, love letter to film making movie where everyone gets their shot and everyone works their hardest and everything works out in the end. But at the same time it's showing you the actual costs of the work you see on screen, whether it be emotional, social, financial, physical in a semi-realistic way. But it doesn't really jive in the end, you can't really have it both ways. I will say I didn't like the Pompo of it all until I realized it's actually pretty realistic that this guy's producer whom he is trying to impress is a literal nepo-baby child who hates movies over 90 minutes (another egregiously bad take this movie insists on).
