Rated Songs from the Second Floor 10/10
LSC 10 Week 5: Anders(s)on Week Beloved is the one who sits down. and watches this movie! Some movies have a way of reaching out of the past and smacking you in the face with a problem that we never bothered to fix. There is always two feelings that hit you, first you despair or just have to let out a resigned chuckle that it's been how ever long and this subject has apparently not changed at all. But after that, there's that feeling of relief. A sense of camaraderie and comfort that people have been through all of this before and they more or less made it out ok, at least the world didn't end. Songs from the Second Floor shows us some of those problems, namely, the drab, slow death of a world poisoned by greed and materialism. A world that feels more like a purgatory between riches and ruin, a sinking ship with no lifeboats left and we despair that this is where we live. But the film also offers the best relief of them all, putting the people who scuttled the ship for their own profits on display for everyone to see, and pulls their fucking pants down. I think this is the part in the review that I should let you know that is a comedy. An extremely funny one at that. Biting as it is surreal, dark as it is silly and angry as it is sorrowful. It's a movie that lets us revel in the stupidity, misery and guilt of the men who make this world worse for everyone else as they throw themselves an extended pity party over the wheels falling off the gravy train. It does so in a truly unique and hauntingly beautiful visual. Static, painterly tableaus with a sort of artificiality that serves to heighten the comedy and the realism. Think if Edward Hopper illustrated a Gary Larson comic. It's so interesting and funny and clever that I immediately just wanted to watch everything this guy has ever made. I wish it wasn't so bleak, that I didn't feel like this movie was just as much about our current moment as it was about the new millennium. I wish I didn't also feel like I was stuck in a traffic jam I didn't ask for trying to get somewhere that probably doesn't exist, caused by the extended tantrums of men who couldn't be arsed to make just little less money. But this movie was a nice way to have a laugh about it. Because what else can we really do? We can shut down and cry in silence or we can laugh and say "Motherfuck every lizard-brained, needle-dick moron in a suit who helped destroy the world for profit thinking they wouldn't be around to face the consequences."
