Rated Super Troopers 5/10
<strong>LSC 10 Week 12: Now For Something Completely Vulgar Week<strong> A staple of bro hangouts everywhere for those of us who came into our 20s in the late oughts, I have managed to get this far without seeing it. I’ve heard people quote it...I even share a last name with one of the characters so that’s always been a fun icebreaker with a certain kind of dude. These kinds of comedies have never really been my jam but for the sake of the challenge I figured I would keep an open mind. Honestly, I’ve watched SO so much worse. 2001 was a strange time right? I mean I was like 13. But it seemed like movies like Super Troopers were out at least once a year. Goofy guys trying to do a regular thing but can’t because they are too wacky and drunk and their wit and good fortune usually rewards them with a chick in her underpants? They just don’t make them like this anymore. Probably cause woke or something...definitely not because these movies were kinda dumb and cringe even at the time. I’ll tell you though, you could NEVER make a movie like this now. Mostly because it’s the most accurate depiction of police officers this side of Cop Land. The guys who make up Broken Lizard have good comedic timing and chemistry together. They are just guys you feel like it would be fun to hang out with. Which helps keep the movie going when the jokes don’t quite land, something that happens more often than not. The ones that DO land are good though. Pretty much everything Rod says is gold and I could have jettisoned the entire subplot with the lady cop kissing the mid guy to have more of him just being oblivious and terrible. I’m really not one of those “this movie doesn’t conform to modern sensibilities so it’s bad” guys. Hopefully I’ve proven that by now. However, I don’t think anyone is immune from watching a movie from the time they grew up and finding stuff that makes you cringe. For the 2000’s it was a wild time, there’s almost always something. That all said, I would be remiss not to give Super Troopers credit where it’s due. Super Troopers manages it’s entire 103 minute runtime without being homophobic or transphobic once. Even for a movie where mid goofy guys get to pull chicks way out of their weight class, it was surprisingly sex positive. It’s not a feminist piece by any means but I was kinda shocked that I don’t have to go back and qualify anything more than I would see in a Marvel movie or something. Is the raunchy comedy something we should bring back? I don’t know. Couldn’t hurt, honestly. But if so, maybe not like this. All of this being said, this movie was actually more fun and charming than I was expecting. I probably should have had 100% more cannabis before watching though.
