Ok I’m revising my score after seeing it in a movie theater. This movie is not perfect. The criticism levied against the script and it’s use of problematic white savior and noble savage tropes are warranted more or less. But it’s crazy that this was the last big original sci-fi movie I can think of. The last time someone took the time and risk to build something completely new and put it out there. Is it perfect? No. But it’s not perfect because doing something like this is really really hard.  It’s crazy that 13 years ago James Cameron gave people a whole new world full of stuff they’d never seen before and people lost their shit over it. And the message Hollywood took from that is “The people want more CGI and everything in 3D” and then stopped there. We have not been given anything this lush and thought out and new since.  Also I hear a lot of people talk about how they can’t make it through the first hour of this movie. And I understand that feeling, it’s rough. But it’s worth it. The third act whips.
