Rated Dragonball Evolution 6/10

Adorable little movie that honestly stays true to its source material better than some more-successful/acclaimed movie adaptations have. I watched it with the benefit of hindsight and living in a world where we got Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Super afterward, as a direct result of Toriyama being unhappy with it, which in a way makes Dragonball Evolution an objective net positive for the world - not just for Dragon Ball, but the world. If you go into it knowing the reception and not expecting to be handed a perfect movie that captures everything you love about Dragon Ball, it's a fun-ass ride. Seeing what little glimpses of Dragon Ball made it into the script and onto the screen was fun, as the mangled outline of the original Dragon Ball anime plays out in a movie that wants to just get to Dragon Ball Z already so badly you can see it in every frame. Honestly, I consider the backlash to the film to be an artifact of the "shitload of fuck!" AVGN era of reactions online. No well-adjusted person would watch this film and decide the screenwriter must be sent death threats, or that Dragon Ball is now somehow ruined. It's cute, you don't have to take it that seriously, and I had a great time with it. :)
