Rated The Boy and the Heron 8/10

This was —like most Ghibli films directed by Miyazaki himself— an instant classic. The animation was absolutely stunning, and perhaps due to the evolution of the craft itself, the best animation I have seen to date within a Studio Ghibli film. It deals with the common themes and symbols you can usually find in many Ghibli movies, such as growing up, dealing with loss and grief, escapism, magical creatures and a fantasy world. Truly, Miyazaki has immense talent and creativity when it comes to building magical realism, which, as a Colombian, I always appreciate very much. Though I would not say it’s his best film to date, especially since it does hit very similar notes to previous films, especially my all time favourite —Spirited Away, it is nonetheless a fantastic and beautiful movie. It also gets extra points because the warawara are incredibly cute (maybe even more so than the susuwatari).
