Rated The Fantastic 4: First Steps 9/10

I was skeptical of the casting when they were originally announced, but after seeing the movie, I think all four members nailed their performances. I especially loved the more modern, lovable take on Johnny, but Ben has my heart most of all. Visually, this is the most interesting Marvel film in ages. I enjoyed their depiction of retrofuturism, which I’m not usually a fan of. Strong color choice and interesting geometry in the sets kept me engaged. Initially, I took issue with the plot feeling awfully hand-wavy—evocative of “that just doesn’t seem realistic.” However, having identified that feeling, and cross-referencing it with the years of realism-obsessed films… I’m quite satisfied with what the writers did here. If anything, their chosen plot conveniences enhance the comic book feel, and I like that a lot.
