Rated Mockingjay 6/10

3. 5stars.

My god. The first book in the series was the best. It puts you on the ground with Katniss, discovering and experiencing the rising action, the terror, the emotions.

The second book did well to bait me into reading the third.

I wish I could give 5 stars for the beginning and 2 for the end. It built and built and built. Those descriptions of all the destruction, the rubble, the loss of life... powerful. Oddly fascinating. Kept me turning the pages.

But then RIGHT AT THE END... no! Collins shifts into MAJOR "tell" mode. Told me that something was dramatic. Withheld seeing those things through the main character's eyes. And I really, really wanted to go through that with Katniss. It felt like she said, "Shit, I need to wrap this up. Here's what happened."

And I wouldn't have minded if it went well over 400 pages. Whatever it takes to tell the story. I just held hope that Katniss and Gale and Peeta would've had more of a dignified ending. To wrap up Katniss and Gale's entire past and relationship in two sentences is unacceptable to me. I wanted to know how it felt to Katniss. And... I wanted to know about it. All of it. It was wrapped up too quickly, too tidily to be anywhere near satisfying.

Essentially, I just read over a thousand pages to have major relationships summed up in one or two paragraphs. Book one: 5 stars. Book two: 4 stars. This one (overall): 3 stars. I just hope they beef up the ending when it comes time to make the movie.

Color me happy for reading it, but disappointed in the ending.
