Rated The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao 4/10

I don't get this book.

== Some vague spoilers ahead. No plot specifics but some spoilers regarding the plot progression ==

The first section talks about Oscar and it rang all the bells… in a bad way. Any nerd outcast could relate to it. Not that we should be proud of it.

The second chapter deals with Oscar's sister and offers a whole different viewpoint and set of priorities. Some context that shed some other light on Oscar troubles on what he finds important and what not.

Then we get even more context, even too much context to the point we forget about Oscar.

Then back to Oscar… but everything is the same. Oscar is unchanged, the narrator is unchanged. What should we take of it?

The book is about Oscar and no matter the context, no matter what we know about it's life he keeps being a selfish and horrible person.

Ok, I identified with him on the first chapter and I was expecting some growth here not because we needed some morals to the story (although it would not be bad, it reinforces the same nerd fantasy reinforces and that's awful, stop with the "I'm entitled to booty, please") it's because there is no sense to why the author is explaining *this* story.

From half the book onwards we return to Oscar, and he repeats the same mistakes of his youth.

== more spoilery rant just to finish it off ==

At the end we get a glimpse of the last love of Oscar. She is a fan of Coelho. Is this and the fact that they don't communicate a sign that Oscar is just objectifying women? Is it criticism? is it a nod from the author?

The last chapter seems to go against it. Oscar breaks the curse. Through an awful relationship "love conquers all".
Come on!

I don't know what was the point of all of that.
