Reportedly Superman is a tough nut to crack, narratively. He’s too good, they say. There’s no narrative tension if he can just magically solve the problem, they say. Wouldn’t the logical extension of this premise be that he becomes a fascist with a poorly disguised mustache, they say. True his powers seem to have been written for a world in which there is only the one superhero. A world without the phrase “power set” – probably a more pleasant world. I bet that world doesn’t have Reddit. But that’s a surface level reading of a character we have been easily reading comics about for like what, 100 years? Nice guy saves day is a premise with legs. I do not need to go to the movies and watch a *dark retelling* of a *nationalist myth* and whatever. Sometimes, I get so sick reading the news all I want is to watch a strong guy punch the problem in the teeth and save a squirrel from the wreckage. That’s why they made him up in the first place, even in New York the 30’s weren’t like, pleasant for a couple of Jewish guys. It’s nice to imagine a guy who’s not only strong, but nice. Here To Help. (In Technicolor!) And there’s a dog like cmon. Sometimes you just want to go to the goddam movies. And what a goddam movie
