When I first watched this as a teen™ I could tell it was good and I knew it was famous, but I could make neither heads nor tails of the damn plot. I figured this was a personal failing, b/c then as now I understand very little, on the whole. So I would rewatch it periodically, taking notes, I must have seen this movie a dozen times by now, and the plot has never made a damn lick of sense. This is because, as I discovered by finally reading the book (which *does* make sense and *is* easy to follow) the Hayes code basically shot this whole story in the head. The fact that this exists at *all* is notable and as it stands is a great example of why sometimes, plot doesn’t fucking matter. Movies do not need plot. All they need is Lauren Bacall looking at a battered Humphrey Bogart and deciding, yes, she *is* going to peg him.
