Rated Frankenstein 6/10
A beautiful movie in many ways, I feel it did not land with me the way it did for many others. I appreciated many of the changes that del Toro made to the story and think they served the vision well and offered a nice change from a straighforward retelling of the novel. Elordi and Isaac both played their roles well, however I found Goth's performance fell somewhat flat for me at times. At others she soared, particularly in her speech to Victor after teaching the monster her name. Using the term Frankenstein's Monster here feels even stranger than in the context of the novel, in all honesty. Additionally, while I can recognize that they were objectively fantastic costumes I absolutely hated most of the outfits that Goth wore throughout the runtime, and her wig was not up the job. I would be remiss if I did not mention that I believe part of why this did not strike me as strongly is that we recently had a Frankenstein-inspired film that I feel far surpasses this one in Lanthimos' Poor Things. In almost every regard I find that to be a surperior movie, and this one suffers from the comparison I cannot help but make. Overall a beautiful and well-done film, but one that falls slightly flat.
