Rated The Magnificent Ambersons 9/10
This is a quietly stunning film, with technical feats and narrative framing choices that I think we take for granted today. The long takes during the dance! The conversations going up staircases or in horse drawn carriages actually moving through a town! Using town gossip for exposition! The core of it is also an understated magic trick: showing you the circumstances that led to George being the way he is, letting you hate him, and then making his downfall feel both deserved and cruel. Hearing that Welles' artistic vision was compromised and that he had an even darker ending planned is tantalizing to speculate about, but this still hits hard!
