I don't think this did enough to set up Carol (Catherine Deneuve, Belle de jour) and her relationships before she goes off the deep end. I got little sense of her as a person, and was thus not particularly invested in her time in the apartment. Her experiences alone also seem to come kind of out of nowhere, unprompted by anything in particular, and I wasn't sure what to make of it all. There's a shot from the POV of a murder victim that makes no sense and is horridly acted, which took me out of it even more at what ought to have been a key moment in the film. It also never really felt like things were going off the rails even as they clearly were. There was a sense of mundanity to the filmmaking that's completely at odds with what's actually happening in the film.
