Rated Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie 3/10

I can't help but feel this was a victim of excessive hype leading to unreasonably high expectations, though I also imagine it would have played much better in a packed theater than at home alone. I came in with no prior knowledge of Matt Johnson, Jay McCarrol, or the show from which this sprung. I don't think it hurt, particularly, though familiarity and connection with the characters is never a bad thing. The two men seem to be playing themselves, or versions thereof—they share full names with their characters if nothing else—as members of a band desperate to play at the Rivoli, which appears to be a tiny club somewhere in Toronto and in no way worth the desperation the two have to play there, specifically. Their plans to get booked involve absolutely everything except reaching out to the club or playing music. The original series ran in 2008, and there's a time travel segment that involves outtakes from that series. It's clever, and it's seamless. Most of it seems to have been shot guerilla style, and takes into account real-life events going on as filming was occurring—a shooting outside Drake's home is repurposed, and a Taylor Swift Eras Tour performance was used as a distraction so they could film relatively unbothered elsewhere in the city—which is a filmmaking style that lends itself to disappointing plots. It doesn't feel particularly coherent or thought-out, and I didn't find it funny enough to cover the gaps.
