My initial thought was that I should have watched this before West Indies: Fugitive Slaves of Liberty, being an earlier film by the same filmmaker that was next on my watchlist. Coming away from it I'm not sure if that would have made me less inclined to start West Indies—which I loved—or like it even more on account of it being so, so much better than this. Where that was essentially a filmed theatre play, and brimmed with lots of presentational ideas, Soleil Ô borders on the documentary. There are some nice touches, like the chatter of passers by being dubbed over by cacophonous animal noises, but for the most part it really is just a guy wandering Paris unable to find a job on account of his race.
