Wow, this took me nearly 3 months to read!



Overall, I really liked it. The world building is brilliant, the characters are interesting and relatable, there is a lot of representation, etc etc etc



But why did it take me so long? I really struggled with the beginning of the book, not that it wasn't good, but because I was so confused. A new POV character in each chapter, a changing narrator (2nd person vs 3rd person), inability to link the stories together (yet), difficulty with parsing the terminology (or distinguishing new terms from my imperfect English), etc. As soon as I started guessing that Damaya and Syen were the same person or that Alabaster broke the world in the prologue, it became way easier to progress.



Maybe I should start reading the back cover first?
