Rated Tomie: Complete Deluxe Edition 10/10

I understand how these stories can appear misogynistic, and how at times it feels like the narrative suggests Tomie may deserve the endless, horrific violence. That’s not for me to determine for others.

At its core, Tomie is a collection of stories about fragile masculinity. It’s about how misogyny shapes society as a whole, and how even women are complicit in that misogyny at times. Tomie as a character feels like a reflection of these characters’ insecurities, the darkest parts of themselves. Does that mean she deserves to be murdered over and over? No. These men result to violence so easily, and they rarely face justice from society and their peers. In fact, sometimes their peers help them cover it up and justify their actions. Their hatred of Tomie and women multiplies, it keeps going. And it’s everywhere, because so is misogyny; senseless, never ending, and grotesque.

Juni Ito is a terrific artist and storyteller.
