Rated Dredd 8/10
Dredd proves that an action flick doesn’t need to be corny or ironic to be manpunchingly brilliant fun. The one-liner has returned in style, and fans of the comic will be pleased that the writers have treated this adaption with care and attention to the source. While Karl Urban is perfect as our favourite gruff, always masked upholder of the law, and Thirby’s portrayal of Anderson brings some nice character development to the mix, Lena Headly steals the show as unhinged bad gal Ma-Ma. Comparisons have been made to The Raid, but while some of the plot devices in that are also present here, these are clearly different movies. They are near neighbours, but each has a very distinct place on the movie map. It would be remiss of me not to mention the 3D, after all it is unlikely you will get the chance to see this film in the cinema in any other way. The effect is used in Dredd in a highly stylised way. It makes it feel more like a comic book, the irony of which is not lost on me. Despite this, the kinks and bugs in current 3D technology are evidently distracting and result in a lower quality picture, and in the end, viewing experience. No more wittering. Get out there and enjoy Dredd. You won’t be disappointed.
