Ach, I don’t know, folks. I think there’s some serious groupthink going on here. The Substance is all flash and very little depth. A swirling mess of imagery that’s trying to say something profound. The movie references come off as hollow and self-congratulatory. And the way it spoon-feeds any subtext feels patronising. Worse, it’s just as guilty of the misogyny it claims to critique. Demi Moore put in a good performance, though.
