Rated Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 2/10

Clearly bitten by the divided response to The Last Jedi, Disney attempts to correct course and give fans, whether they liked the previous film or not, what they want. The Rise of Skywalker doesn't really retcon the events of the previous film, but it doesn't really follow off of them either. Instead, the plot centers on the resurrection of Emperor Palpatine, the series' original big bad, and his attempt to conquer the galaxy. Since this plotline had no setup in the previous two films, they basically have to shoehorn a trilogy's worth of plot into this movie. There's not a lot of time for new action set pieces or character development, and the movie feels so disconnected from the rest of the trilogy that the character development from those movies doesn't really carry over. Despite spending three movies fighting and nearly dying together, they interact entirely in this weird inhuman way where they can only make quips to each other. This movie was billed as the end of a story 40 years in the making, but it feels like a fan-fic that was written over a weekend. Just as bad and weird as the worst of Lucas's prequels but not nearly as interesting.
