Kept insisting on getting this from the library because of Mary-Louise Parker (Zoya) and Mary-Louise Parker delivered, giving a standout performance amongst colleagues also delivering great character work. Ayo Edebiri (Paula) culminates in one power scene as a co-lead that you root for. I'm getting the sense that this was underwhelming for many, so maybe this is just hitting me at a particular time. Zoya has had to do very specific things to get to where she is in life, but you don't need special pills to get this feeling. If you've ever felt like you need to min-max your situation to keep progressing, you can get caught in this obsessive loop of declaring your entire life suboptimal - particularly when the inevitable happens and you stop grinding just so you can experience things. So you can see the final montage and moralistic ending coming a mile away, but it was something I wanted to see this character experience. I think this parable just works for me. If you're in a melancholic mood, maybe it'll work for you too.
