Rated The Fantastic 4: First Steps 8/10

Setting this in a fully alternate reality from the MCU clips away all the potential baggage that could have turned this into a convoluted tangle of leaden knots. The Fantastic Four's universe is cartoony, generally light hearted, and fantastical in a way reminiscent of how Tim Burton envisions Gotham City. Admittedly, sometimes a tough watch for the parent of an infant, ranging from a dangerous birth sequence up through actual mortal peril for a baby. But, you know. Herbie's there. Taking care of the kid. That's nice. It's my favorite Marvel of the year simply because they gave themselves the space to just tell one, focused adventure story with characters that are decently fleshed out. From what I know of the comics, Reed Richards isn't exactly good about keeping things uncomplicated, so we'll see what happens next, but within a cultural miasma of ponderousness and fretting over the legacy of superheroics, it was a fun time to just sit back and enjoy a romp.
