Rated The Apartment 10/10

Rather jaw-dropping to see a film with the look of old Hollywood telling an extremely salacious story while maintaining your hope for a classic Hollywood ending. I do think one of the many keys to this is Fred MacMurray's character and the utter sleaze he's able to perform through. You never quite know what Shirley Maclaine sees in him, but she sells you on the fact that she's sincere in her affections. Despite the fact that you want a big showy kiss at the end of it all, there's an ambiguous nature to the ending. These two might never make it work. He might really just not be her type. They barely know each other. Are they actually good for each other? They each have self destructive tendencies that kick in after major disappointments in life. And yet, that card game is so cathartic. Just a masterclass.
