Rated My Dead Friend Zoe 7/10

Sonequa Martin-Green submits an impressive turn as Merit, an Afghanistan veteran whose PTSD drives the plot and themes of My Dead Friend Zoe. Martin-Green leverages a lot of subtlety and control of her facial expressions to convincingly play a character who is having something of an allegorical hallucination and keeping a lot from the friends and family that are literally present in her life. Natalie Morales has a difficult role as Zoe. She has to be abrasive in a funny way, but also convey a stack of traumas that lead to her being the way she was at the moment of her death. She is the antagonist and sometimes the movie codes her as a malicious ghost, but she also has to be, bafflingly, a helpful and calming balm that would keep pulling Merit back. Morales shows talent. The screenplay needs work.
